This is not another "how to write a grant proposal" book. Unlike existing books, Getting Grants argues that no matter the type of organization, there is a direct relationship between the organization’s internal proposal development process and how successful the organization is at securing grant funding. |

Chapter 1: They Just Don’t Get It, Do They? In this chapter, the author discusses the misunderstandings that exist surrounding grant funding. She provides anecdotal information on her perception of the field upon entering it and discusses the perceptions of others towards grants. Two camps exist related to writing and obtaining grant funds—the “Anybody can write a grant!” camp and the “Grants are a lot of trouble!” camp. This chapter discusses the reality versus the misperceptions of these two schools of thought. Chapter 2: What is a Grant and Where Can We Get One? Getting down to the basics, this chapter will provide the reader with all the information he or she needs to know about 1) what exactly is a grant, 2) where do you go to find out about grants, 3) how to research funding sources, and 4) how to determine whether or not to apply for a particular grant. Chapter 3: If You’re in the Grants Office, Why Aren’t You Writing the Grant? This chapter discusses the variety of ways that organizations go about deciding who is responsible for writing grants. Are all grant writers created equal? Not exactly. As a matter of fact, there is a lot more to working with grants than just writing them. Proposal development and administration is a separate profession altogether. This chapter gives an organization-by-organization breakdown of how to plan and develop a grants process that will maximize the ease of proposal preparation and the possibility of obtaining funding. Chapter 4: You Expect Me to Write It? Chapter 4 is a step-by-step tutorial on how to write a grant proposal. There have been many books on the market about grant writing, and the majority of them will devote entire books to what the author includes in Chapter 4. The mechanics of writing a grant proposal are very important, but understanding the entire process is just as important. Chapter 5: Justify Those Funds! Chapter 5 is a tutorial on creating the dreaded grant budget. It also includes information on the little understood indirect cost rate, an important aspect of grant budgets, but in the author's experience, very few know its true significance. Chapter 6: You’re in the Homestretch! Chapter 6 addresses the proposal submission process and the proposal review process, as well as offers some insight and advice concerning issues like grant partnerships, deadlines, and the politics of grant making. In this chapter, the reader will be instructed on what to do after a funding decision has been made. What is required of grantees that are awarded grant funding? What do you do when your grant proposal is declined for funding? Chapter 8: Now Let Me Tell You What Not to Do! In this chapter, the author uses a total of twelve scenarios as examples to demonstrate what can go wrong when an organization does not have a formal proposal planning and development process in place, nor a general set of rules dictating conduct concerning grants. All anecdotal evidence is either the result of personal experience in the profession or the experience of colleagues. All twelve examples will show that there is a direct link between established grants procedures, the quality of the proposal development process, ease of the proposal preparation experience or a lack thereof, and the odds of a grant being funded. Chapter 9: The Real Skinny on Free Government Grants! This chapter is devoted to the likely tens of thousands of Americans who have seen the late night infomercials and the Saturday morning programs with “average Americans” who have applied for and received “free government grants” to pay medical bills, buy houses, and start their own businesses. For all of those who want to know the truth about the availability of government money that you don’t have to pay back, this chapter’s for you. |
